Close Enough Wiki

"The Canine Guy" is the eighth episode (and the fifteenth story overall) of Close Enough, as well as the Season 1 finale.

Synopsis[]

After a fight with Alex, Josh befriends a talking dog, while Emily and Bridgette receive inspiration from "Weird Al" Yankovic on a songwriting retreat in the forest.

Plot[]

The episode begins 15 years ago with a high school-aged Josh and Alex at a Medieval Times restaurant, with the two psyched that it’s the same one from "The Cable Guy", as the two are big Jim Carey fans and even wear t-shirts with his characters on them and quote his films amongst themselves and the jaded waitress. They agree to visit on the same day every year forever, and it flashes to five years later when they’re both now in college, still having the same great time. However, it then flashes to one year ago from the present, and only Josh is enjoying himself and quoting Jim Carey while Alex appears disinterested and is focused on his novel, which Josh is oblivious to and declares they both still love it after all these years.

In the present, Alex steps outside for some quiet, where Josh jumps out at him dressed in a full suit and armor for their Medieval Times-iversary. However, Alex expresses that he had been caught up with the latest draft of his Viking-themed science fiction novel, and that he is meeting a publishing agent later on in the day. He asks Josh to look over to and give him notes, but Josh doesn’t want to spend their Medieval Times-iversary on it, and he becomes more offended when Alex downplays it further by saying The Cable Guy doesn’t hold up well and that the food isn’t historically accurate. Josh declares that he will go alone.

Meanwhile, Emily and Bridgette are shown performing a gig at "Solid Grounds" coffee shop, but the crowd dwindles down and doesn’t give them much attention, and the gig ends early. On the drive home, Bridgette expresses that the band isn’t just them "hanging out" and she wants her and Emily to get back to their roots and go to a cabin into the woods and write songs like they used to, as they haven't written a new song since Emily had Candice, and Bridgette says they won’t ever again if she keeps acting like "a mom-bie". Emily says she’d love to but she has a busy weekend, to Bridgette's annoyance.

Josh goes to Medieval Times without Alex, but he is miserable without him, lamenting that they’re drifting apart. On his way out of the restaurant, Josh sees a dog in an alley, and decides to feed it the drumstick he was holding in his hand.

To his surprise, the dog can talk, and is fully clothed and has an anthropomorphic body. The dog tells Josh that he had been genetically spliced but had failed to impress his owner, he has since then run away to escape her mistreatment. Josh and the talking dog who revealed his name to be Tory reconvened at the latter's van. Josh proclaimed that he will refer to his new friend as DogBoy.

As Josh returns home he meets up with Alex who told him that he had canceled his meeting with the publishing agent so they could hang out at Medieval Times to which Josh replied that he had already gone without him. This angers Alex and the two part ways again.

It wasn't until later that Alex actually sees DogBoy in their apartment. Shortly after this time; Meredith Breedmore, DogBoy's previous owner comes by the house. She had spotted DogBoy's conspicuous van outside the apartment complex and had concluded DogBoy to be there. The door however was answered by Josh who insisted that there were no talking dogs around. Meredith then left continuing to put up fliers.

Alex was first angered by the fact that Josh was using DogBoy to make him jealous but he quickly got over it. Josh and DogBoy continued to hang out while Alex continued to get his novel rejected.

In the ensuing weekend, Alex comes home to find out that DogBoy had chewed up a part of his draft. Alex felt that he had no choice but to text Meredith that he indeed knew where DogBoy was. Alex had done so via the number he had gotten off of one of Meredith's fliers.

Suddenly DogBoy enters the den. Alex confronted DogBoy about ripping up a part of his draft but DogBoy stated that he merely made adjustments to Alex's work. DogBoy felt that the character of Alex shouldn't have been killed off. DogBoy then presented Alex with a whole new draft and said that Alex's work is good and there is groundwork there for an entire franchise.

Alex suddenly found comfort in DogBoy and had quickly regretted sending his earlier text. He checked his phone to find out the message hadn't been sent; much to his relief. Alex did however forget to delete the message and the message ultimately did get sent.

As DogBoy went out to urinate on a fire hydrant Josh and Alex argued once again over who DogBoy likes more. Much to their astonishment DogBoy had been kidnapped by Meredith Breedmore. Josh and Alex knew where to look as Alex still had possession of the flier he had used earlier. They hadn't made up but decided to look for DogBoy together. Josh and Alex arrived in Meredith's facility just in time to stop Meredith from extracting DogBoy's testicles with a buzz-saw. She had hoped to use them to make a new DogBoy; one who would prove to be a far better actor. It was at this time that Meredith revealed herself to be an animal movie producer and animal geneticist to Josh and Alex.

Meredith then summons William Shakesbear and the other animal hybrids to attack Josh and Alex. Josh and Alex did their best to avoid the animals and free DogBoy from his shackles but they were tasered motionless by Meredith. Josh and Alex made up and reminisced an inside joke of theirs, where they would imitate the sound of a moose, calling it the "most annoying sound in the world".

They did just that and freed William Shakesbear and the other animal hybrids from what was revealed to be a state of hypnosis. Suddenly; Pearle, leading a squadron of LAPD Officers stormed the scene via police helicopter and arrested Meredith for unpaid parking tickets.

Josh, his family, and his friends including DogBoy were later seen at a restaurant where Emily and Bridgette presented a song in honor of their new friend DogBoy.

DogBoy was later seen driving away in his van in pursuit of his dreams. It was later revealed that DogBoy had become a successful producer and all of Meredith's animals are living happy lives except Earskunk, who had died in a bathtub electrocution accident.

    • The same song was also played at the end of the Regular Show episode "Fuzzy Dice" and The Lunch Club.
    • The montage reveals the episode takes place in 2019, as EarSkunk's memorial slide says 2019 -2019. Emily also says Candice goes to college in 2032, and if she was born five years previous in 2014 she would be eighteen and old enough to go to college in 2032.
  • The episodes heavily features references to various Jim Carrey films from the '90s, such as Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Cable Guy (which the episode's title parodies), and The Mask.

  • Bridgette mentions for the first time that she has a sister. Her sister, Olivia Hashima, would be properly introduced in the Season 3 episode "Bridgette the Brain".
