Close Enough Wiki

"Houseguest From Hell" is the second segment of the tenth episode (and the nineteenth story overall) of Close Enough.

Synopsis[]

Emily lets an old friend crash at the apartment but getting rid of her proves difficult.

Plot[]

Emily is watching internet videos on her phone when, to her horror, she gets a call from her old friend Becca. We then get flashbacks to Emily meeting Becca as her college roommate, where Becca is shown to be quite obnoxious and self centered, as she goes on and on about herself and her own dramas in her personal and dating life to Emily while having no concern for her, much to the discomfort and gradual frustration of Emily, as we see this continue all throughout their college parties and graduation ceremony, during her and Josh's wedding, and even when she’s in labor with Candice. Back in the present Emily reluctantly answers her call.

The next night Emily is meeting Becca for drinks. Josh says Becca sucks and doesn’t understand why she doesn’t just cancel when she hates her too, but Emily explains she’s her oldest friend. Bridgette insists she's too nice and needs to set boundaries, and Emily agrees and texts Becca to cancel. We hear a few text alerts and Emily sending a single short reply, and Emily reveals they’re meeting at 7, and it’ll be on Becca's side of town and she’ll be buying because Becca is short on cash.

Becca arrives to the restaurant late, saying she forgot Emily wanted to meet that night, which Emily replies she was the one who called her. Becca ignores her and, as per usual, then starts to complain about her relationship problems with her latest boyfriend Luc, at one point citing he’s self centered and wonders when someone will pay attention to her, and to cope Emily starts drinking excessive amounts of wine. Emily eventually drunkenly cuts Becca off and tells her that relationships can get toxic and she needs to set boundaries for herself - the same thing Bridgette told her, but accidentally says "enough is enough, Becca!" but then tries to correct herself, asking Becca to remind her what her boyfriends name is. Becca is offended that Emily apparently is bad at listening, but genuinely tells her that it’s really good advice. She decides to change the subject and asks Emily if she’s seeing anyone, Emily tells her she’s married and she was even at her wedding. While looking at her phone Becca says she doesn’t think that’s true, and Emily groans and starts drinking from the wine bottle.

The next morning an exhausted Emily tells the others her meeting with Becca went well enough and hopefully she got enough facetime with her to not see her again for another few years again. However, to her horror, a tearful Becca shows up at the front door revealing she broke up with Luc, and convinces Emily to let her stay just for the night, saying she’s her best friend, and it’s technically her fault but she could be homeless if she wants. Emily reluctantly agrees, to the chagrin of everyone else.

Two weeks later, Becca has gotten on everyone’s last nerve, from hogging the shower and using all Bridgette's beauty products, hogging the couch and TV and not letting Josh watch anything when he asks, and moving all her clothes into the walk in closet where Alex sleeps and getting rid of all of his belongings in the process, being completely oblivious to everyone’s feelings. Each time she gets called out for these she responds with some form of "An iced coffee would be great!" She also has Candice wait on her and refers to her as "Tiny Butler", which the former thinks is playing pretend. Emily agrees that it’s time to kick her out. However, when Emily tries to talk to her Becca immediately cuts her off and tearfully reveals she had "breakup sex" with Luc and now she’s pregnant. Emily decides she can’t kick her out cause then she’ll be a monster.

The next morning while having coffee in the kitchen Emily tells Josh she plans to try and get Becca back on her feet before she’s too far along. However Becca walks in and is revealed to have became fully pregnant overnight, and when she has Emily feel the baby kick demonic noises are heard from her stomach. She has also invited Hecate, an elderly friend of Luc's to be her doula for her home birth.

Hecate is shown performing demonic rituals and talking in tongues to prepare Becca for her birth. Emily, in an effort to get Becca out, takes Becca's phone and texts Luc that she wants to get back together with him. Luc shows up, and it’s revealed he’s both Lucifer the devil, and he’s just as obnoxious as Becca. He finds out she’s pregnant and the two start making out. Becca announces they’re getting back together, and the Luc is going to crash with her too. Emily puts her foot down and says he cannot stay with them, but just then Becca yells to shut up as her water breaks, which burns a hole in the floor.

In Josh and Emily's bedroom, Becca is about to give birth, as Hecate continues to perform her ritual. Luc is outside the room flirting with Bridgette. Emily brings in towels and Becca chastises her for not bringing the good ones and calls her selfish. Emily finally snaps and tells Becca off for how selfish and self centered she’s been to her throughout the entire time she’s known her, and when none of it gets through to her and she refuses to take responsibility for her selfish actions, with the last straw being Becca not remembering she has a daughter when she brings her up, Emily loses it and shouts to get out of her house and out of her life. Becca says she’s "such a bitch" as she gives birth to a demon.

The next day Luc and Becca move out. As Emily and Becca amicably say goodbye to each other, Becca then says she’s cutting Emily out cause she’s the toxic one and she’s a mother now, something Emily wouldn’t understand. An incredibly frustrated Emily says she has a daughter and points to Candice, who Becca insists is Tiny Butler. Luc obnoxiously honks and calls for Becca from his car, and Becca tells Emily she’ll understand what it’s like to be in a relationship one day. A deadpan Emily exhales deeply and tells Becca to go to hell. Becca whines that says she is and complains Emily never listens as Emily cuts her off by slamming the door in her face.
